Manchester United are keen to keep star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford for two more years, as per reports.
The Sun have reported that Manchester United will certainly trigger the one-year extension option in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s contract, but the club also wants to add a further 12 months in the star striker’s deal to keep him at Old Trafford until 2019.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been a superstar of world football, and there are no two ways about that. The Swedish superstar has played for some of the giants of European football, enjoying productive spells with the likes of Ajax, Juventus, Inter, Barcelona, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
Having won multiple trophies with every club he played for, Ibrahimovic decided to make a delayed entry into England, as he signed on a free transfer for Manchester United this past summer. After initially struggling to adjust to life in England, the former Sweden captain is well and truly back to his prolific best.
Ibrahimovic just can’t stop scoring at the moment, having netted 10 times in his last 11 Premier League appearances for Manchester United. His unmistakable influence for the Red Devils was visible yet again on Sunday as he scored a vital goal for his side to ensure a late 1-1 draw with Liverpool.
That goal took his tally for the season to 19 in all competitions, and Ibrahimovic has already eclipsed the tally set by last season’s top scorer Anthony Martial who scored 17 goals in what was a mediocre season overall for Manchester United.
Ibrahimovic originally signed a one-year contract with Manchester United, with an option to extend it by a further year. His manager Jose Mourinho has already indicated that the club would be taking up the option to activate that particular clause in the Swede’s deal.
Now it looks like Manchester United are eager to not only extend the deal with Ibrahimovic by twelve more months, but by two years. If they succeed in persuading Ibrahimovic to sign the two-year extension, then he could stay at Old Trafford until 2019, when the Swedish superstar would have turned 37.
Manchester United have already handed extensions to Marouane Fellaini and Antonio Valencia in the last two weeks, and if they manage to agree on the two-year contract extension with Ibrahimovic it would have be the biggest deal so far.
However, it remains to be seen if Ibrahimovic is keen to extend his stay at Old Trafford or seek a new challenge elsewhere.
