Gerginio Wijnaldum urges Liverpool FC to sign transfer target Quincy Promes

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has stated that he wants compatriot Quincy Promes to join him at Anfield

According to Kristian Walsh of the Liverpool Echo, Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has urged the club to sign transfer target Quincy Promes. The Spartak Moscow attacker is known to be a friend of Wijnaldum due to their time spent on the international circuit with Netherlands.

When posed the question about whether or not he would like to see his Dutch compatriot join Liverpool, Wijnaldum said:

“I think he knows how great Liverpool is — I knew it before I came here. I don’t know if everything is true about what they say as I don’t speak with him about that.

“Of course I want him to come to Liverpool because I know he is a good player and also a good person who can help the team but it is something for the manager and the scouts, not for me.”

“I just read it in the papers or on the internet.”

Quincy Promes has been a Liverpool target for quite a while, but the Reds have now stepped up the chase to sign the attacker after losing out Julian Draxler to Paris St. Germain. The Merseyside club were never among the front runners to sign the German, but showed a slimmer of interest when he was nearing a move to the Ligue 1.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is looking to bolster his attack in January as he will be losing his side’s leading goal scorer this season, Sadio Mane, due to the African Cup of Nations. With eight goals in the league already, the former Southampton attacker has become pivotal to the manager’s plans at the club.

Also, with the continued absence of Philippe Coutinho and the uncertainty over Daniel Sturridge’s future at Anfield, Klopp is expected to sign an attacking option in the January transfer window.

At 24 years of age, Promes perfectly fits the bill for the German at Liverpool. The Spartak winger is a consistent performer and has characteristics akin to Mane. He is a constant worker and runs tirelessly up and down the flank.

He is already a full international, making 16 appearances for the Netherlands side till date, and is regarded as one of the next big things in Dutch football. Currently on contract at Spartak until 2021, Promes is unlikely to come on the cheap, but it is an investment that could pay great dividends in the long run.
