Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho confirms Morgan Schneiderlin’s transfer request amid West Brom interest

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he will allow Morgan Schneiderlin to leave the club, provided an adequate offer is on the table

The Red Devils are set to take on Sunderland at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. Speaking to the press building up to the game, manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has handed in a transfer request.

“If he is playing regularly, I have a right to say ‘no way’. If he is not playing regularly, I have no right to say ‘you are not going anywhere’. He is a great professional. A fantastic boy,” said Mourinho as per the BBC.

In the summer of 2015, former United boss Louis van Gaal paid an impressive £25 million to Southampton to secure the services of the Frenchman. They reportedly saw off interest from other top English sides to seal the transfer of the highly-rated defensive midfielder.

After joining for an amount such as that, Schneiderlin was expected to break right into the United midfield, but then failed to feature on a regular basis throughout the 2015/16 campaign due to injuries and lack of form.

At his prolific best midway through the season, he formed a decent pairing with Bastian Schweinsteiger – which the Old Trafford faithful labelled as “Schmidfield.” But with the likes of Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini all competing for the midfield berth, Schneiderlin was restricted to just 25 league starts, where his performances were a tad underwhelming.

Things have deteriorated further under Mourinho as the Frenchman is yet to start a Premier League match. The 27-year-old does have three league appearances to his name this term, but all three have been off the bench and have accounted to only eleven minutes.

West Brom manager Tony Pulis has confirmed that a bid has been made for the player and it is believed to be in the region of £13 million. Everton are also reportedly keeping an eye on Schneiderlin, and could also come in with the right offer that could be accepted by the Red Devils.
