Premier League giants Arsenal have been dealt a huge blow in their pursuit for Julian Draxler as the German attacker has reportedly agreed a deal with Paris St Germain.
According to French media outlet RMC Sport, Wolfsburg attacker Julian Draxler has snubbed an offer from Arsenal to agree a contract with Ligue 1 giants Paris St. Germain and is set to sign a four-year-contract at the Parc des Princes. The French side are likely to pay a total of €40 million to secure the German’s services.
Draxler has been an Arsenal target for a number of transfer windows, but it seems manager Arsene Wenger has lost out on another one of his top transfer targets. The 24-year-old was monitored during his days at Schalke and the interest in him rose after his stellar showing with Germany at Euro 2016.
The player was subject to growing media speculation in the summer and also had a host of top European clubs vying for his signature. However, to the amusement of many, Wolfsburg managed to play hard ball and kept hold of their prized asset.
In the summer, the player had publicly stated his desire to leave the German side, but the club came out with an official statement that the player was not for sale.
This news certainly did not gel well with the player, but he carried on representing Wolfsburg this season and has made a total of 12 Bundesliga starts until now. However, during the latter stages of November, reports began to circulate that the player was unhappy at the club with Wolfsburg admitting that Draxler could leave the side in January.
The scenario further deteriorated when Draxler was omitted from Wolfsburg’s squad to face Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. There were suggestions that the player’s days at the Volkswagen Arena were numbered and it now seems that PSG is where the German attacker is destined to ply his trade.
This undoubtedly will be a huge blow for Wenger and the Arsenal hierarchy who were looking to add guile to their wide attacking options. Attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil also requested the club to sign his German compatriot and will be disappointed after learning about his destination.
