Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly keen to do a deal to bring Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo over to the Bundesliga

Daily Mail have claimed that Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has emerged as a January target for Bayer Leverkusen. The Bundesliga club is looking to add the Argentine to their defensive arsenal, in order to boost their European ambitions.

Marcos Rojo arrived at Manchester United during the reign of Louis Van Gaal in a £16m deal from Sporting CP. The Argentine gave a solid account of himself in his debut season in the Premier League notching up 22 appearances, 20 of which he started, with an average rating of 7.26.

The next season was rather average for the 26-year-old as he appeared in only 16 league matches for the club. Jose Mourinho’s appointment as Manchester United boss brought along rumours of an impending exit for Marcos Rojo, who was linked with a move to Valencia or Southampton.

The player has been tipped for an eventual exit but the 26-year-old has since played his way into Jose Mourinho’s first-team plans with a few impressive outings in all competitions. Rojo now has 5 league appearances and has crossed double figures in terms of appearances in all competitions this season.

However, Bayer Leverkusen are now showing interest in the player’s services. The Bundesliga outfit has found success in the past from transfer dealings with Manchester United in the form of Javier Hernandez, who has been successfully leading the front-line at Bayer.

And it looks like they are looking for further success with a deal now for Marcos Rojo. Leverkusen have progressed to he next stages in the Champions League and are looking to add a defender to their squad to cope with both the domestic league and their European journey.

Jose Mourinho is also rumoured to be on the lookout for a defender and Marcos Rojo’s sale could make room for potential arrivals, financially and otherwise. Manchester United are, however, likely to want to recoup most of their £16m investment in the 26-year-old.

Alternatively, Mourinho may choose to keep the player, who has really held his own in his outings and has impressed everyone with his desire and drive on the field.
