European giants Barcelona and AC Milan are set to compete for Borussia Dortmund starlet Julian Weigl, according to reports in the Italian media.

According to Italian publication Calciomercato, Barcelona and AC Milan are set to go head-to-head for Dortmund’s highly rated midfielder Julian Weigl. The Rossoneri have reportedly made tentative enquiries about the player and their sporting director Massimo Mirabelli has requested for information on the Germany international. The report also states that the Italian giants will be facing competition from La Liga champions Barcelona.

Since taking over the reigns this summer, Vincenzo Montella has managed to turn things around at the San Siro in spectacular fashion with a young and exciting team, who currently sit in third place in the Serie A, only 4 points behind league leaders Juventus.

Milan have been linked to many young stars across Europe as they look to establish themselves in the Champions League and stay there in the future. To that end, Julian Weigl would be a superb long term-addition to their midfield.

Meanwhile, Barcelona do not have anyone in their ranks in the same ilk and of the same quality as Sergio Busquets. Julian Weigl would be perfect for this role. At only 28 years of age, Busquets has a long way to go before calling time on his career and Weigl is the perfect candidate to be Busquets’ understudy for the short term, before eventually taking on his mantle.

Since making his Dortmund debut in 2015, the 21-year-old has gone on to become a permanent fixture in Thomas Tuchel’s side. Last season, he made an astounding 51 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions.

His impressive performances have also seen him break into the German national squad. Blessed with a superb eye for a pass and technical ability which surpasses his years, Weigl would be the perfect fit as a defensive midfielder for not just Barcelona and AC Milan, but almost any top club in Europe. As such, it is no surprise that he is widely regarded as one of the best young midfielders in the world and has been earmarked for greatness in the future.
