Manchester United are reportedly looking to reward Juan Mata for his fine form by opening talks of a new long-term deal for the Spaniard
The Sun are claiming that Manchester United are looking to speed up contract extension talks with Juan Mata. The Spaniard, who has been in fine form for the Red Devils this season, has already held talks over a new deal earlier with the club but is yet to agree to anything up until now.
Juan Mata joined Manchester United from Chelsea in the January transfer window during the managerial reign of David Moyes and has since been an integral part of the first-team setup and the starting lineup at the club. Jose Mourinho’s appointment at Manchester United brought along speculation of Mata’s impending exit from the first-team fold at the club due to their history at Chelsea.
Juan Mata was heavily linked with an exit during the summer with Everton the most prominently linked club. However, those rumours were put to rest with Mourinho confirming Juan Mata’s place in his plans, although he said that the player should be ready to accept a squad role at the club with the prospect of the Spaniard starting 1 match out of 3.
But to everyone’s surprise, Juan Mata has been able to lock down a permanent place, of sorts, in Mourinho’s plans at Old Trafford and has become one of the main men for the Portuguese.
The player’s current contract, which has the player earning £130,000 per-week, is not up for expiry until 2018 and United still have a 1-year extension option in the current deal.
There were earlier reports that Juan Mata and his representatives are ready to wait until the summer of 2017 to talk about contract renewal. However, Jose Mourinho is now keen to tie down his key players to long-term deals and has recommended Manchester United to open contract talks with Juan Mata soon.
Given the current results, handing out contract renewals to key players might be one way to strengthen the dampened spirits of the squad. Juan Mata has often spoken of his love for Manchester United, and would like nothing more than to sign a new long-term deal at the club.
And we are sure the fans would love it if one of the most loved players in the squad is tied down to a long-term deal.
