Transfer Rumour: Manchester United scouting Barcelona youngster Carles Alena

Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on Barcelona youngster Carles Alena who has been termed as the ‘next Iniesta.’

According to Tom Hopkinson of the Daily Mirror, the Red Devils are scouting 18-year-old sensation Carles Alena who has been in a fine run of form for Barcelona B. The player’s style of play is akin to that of Andres Iniesta and Alena has been lauded as the successor to the Spanish midfield maestro.

The Mirror report states that the Spanish giants are aware of the interest their youth prospect has garnered, and are looking to tie him down to a new four year deal at the Nou Camp. It is also stated that a bumper release clause of £43 million is likely to be added to his new contract.

Alena is an adept passer of the ball, and despite only being 18 years of age, the Spaniard’s game already shows signs of maturity. He is good with the ball at his feet and is seldom dispossessed off it. His passing exploits are also noteworthy and looks like the real deal for Barcelona.

The 18-year-old has also been praised heavily by Spanish football journalist Sergi Dominiguez. “Aleña in the squad for the game vs Valencia tomorrow? Fantastic news, one of the biggest talents at Barça’s youth ranks – remember the name,” said Dominiguez.

While an interest from a coveted club like Manchester United can be flattering, it is unlikely that Barcelona will be willing to let go of their up and coming midfielder. Alena is also on the periphery of breaking into the first team as he was named as one of the substitutes for Barcelona’s weekend game against Malaga.

The Catalan giants have seen a number of their youngsters leave the club after they were eligible to sign a professional contract. Defender Gerard Pique and midfielder Cesc Fabregas both decided to have a go at Premier League football before eventually returning to where it all began for them.

Alena, however, is unlikely to be sold, and it seems implausible for Jose Mourinho to shell out a staggering £43 million for a player who is still to be capped on the international level.
