Transfer News: Manchester United misfit Memphis Depay coy on Everton move after Ronald Koeman confirms interest

Manchester United misfit Memphis Depay has refused to rule out a potential move to Everton after Ronald Koeman’s confession that the Toffees are monitoring the Dutch winger.

Koeman, last week, publicly revealed his intentions to sign Manchester United struggler Memphis Depay after labelling his fellow Dutchman as a “great talent.” The Everton boss was present to watch the winger in the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Belgium last week, and confirmed that he would be interested in signing Depay.

He had said: “I would love to have him in my team at Everton. He is a very interesting player in my opinion. He has a lot of individual quality, is always dangerous going forward and is pretty efficient as well. He just needs to get regular playing time again.”

Holland international Depay joined Manchester United for £25 million on him from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2015, having lead the Dutch giants to the Eredivisie title in the 2014-15 season. The move has been anything but the resounding success that he and the Red Devils supporters had been dreaming of when he arrived at Old Trafford, though. Having struggled to get the minutes under his belt, he has failed to reproduce the form that had a horde of clubs swarming for his signature.

A winter transfer window move to Goodison Park is likely to be a loan deal, with a view to make the transfer a permanent one next summer. When asked about Koeman’s comments last week, Depay remained coy, revealing little. Speaking to FOX Sports Netherlands (h/t Goal), Depay said: “I do not know, we’ll have to see.”

Depay helped his country to a 3-1 win over Luxemborg last night, as he scored a brace to give an indication that he might be clawing his way back to form. Taking confidence from his performance in the World Cup qualifying match, Depay added that he is now looking to fight for his place at Manchester United.

“I want to focus on United, I do my very best to be able to get more gametime. I’m going back to United with a good feeling, because I have played for Netherlands and we won. That is the most important thing.”

Depay has been heavily linked with a move away from Manchester United in the last few weeks, with Juventus, Marseille, Galatasaray and Wolfsburg all monitoring the Dutch winger. A loan move to Everton, however, represents a chance for Depay to make a mark in the Premier League and convince Jose Mourinho for one last chance to fulfill his promising potential.

Whether or not Koeman makes good on his intentions remains to be seen. Depay, though, can only improve by playing week in week out, and get the rhythm that saw him being hailed as one of the most prodigious young talents in Europe.
