AC Milan are reportedly eyeing a move for Manchester United’s Dutch international Memphis Depay in the upcoming transfer window.
Italian publication calciomercatoweb have claimed that as per the news gathered by their staff, AC Milan are lining up a move for Memphis Depay in January. The Rossoneri are reportedly ready to make an offer of upto £24m for the Dutch winger to prize him away from Manchester United.
Depay joined Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven last summer with a price tag of £25m and was hailed as an incredible signing for the Red Devils as well as the future torchbearer of the club’s much famed number 7 jersey. The 22-year-old appeared in 29 Premier League games but failed to make his mark in his debut season under former manager Louis Van Gaal (stats via whoscored).
There were rumours that Depay was to be offloaded in the summer after the appointment of Jose Mourinho at the helm but the Portuguese decided to keep the winger in his squad. But, Depay has not seen much game time thus far with only 6 minutes of playing time received in the Premier League.
The former PSV man did start in the EFL Cup tie against Northampton and gave a decent account of his abilities but it is likely to take better and more consistent performances from the winger in order to convince Mourinho to make him a more integral part of his first-team setup.
The report states that the takeover of AC Milan by the Chinese consortium is due to be completed in the immediate future and with some new-found money to burn, Rossoneri manager Vincenzo Montella is lining up a move for the Dutch international with an aim to beef up his attack.
The report, though, added that AC Milan are looking to secure a loan move for the player in January with an option to buy the player in the subsequent transfer window for a fee around £24m, which would recoup almost the entirety of the fee paid by Manchester United to PSV to secure the player’s services in the first place.
However, there is still time to go till January and Depay may well carve out a place for himself in Mourinho’s plans with a few impressive performances. But, AC Milan are likely to keep a keen eye on the developments in Depay’s role at Manchester United and could follow up their interest as aforementioned if they feel they could secure a move for the player.
