Arsenal transfer ‘madness’ revealed as pursuit of Borussia Dortmund striker Marco Reus

For the major part of the summer, fans were left frustrated as Arsenal remained inactive in the transfer market after the early signing of Granit Xhaka.

The Gunners eventually completed late deals for German defender Shkodran Mustafi and Spanish striker Lucas Perez late in the window. But during the period, an Arsenal insider had claimed on Twitter that Arsene Wenger was planning a transfer ‘madness’.

The Twitter handle, named @afcadmen, had Arsenal fans on tenterhooks, with many of them enraged that the admin refused to name which player was the ‘madness’ he/she was talking about.

The user had predicted the signing of Rob Holding from Bolton 13 days before the deal was announced, which immediately boosted his credibility in the tumultuous period that is the summer transfer window.

It has taken more than two weeks after the transfer window slammed shut, but he/she has now stated that the transfer madness was Wenger’s attempt to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Marco Reus.

According to his webpage, Arsenal have been interested in Marco Reus for more than two years now. Wenger had initially tried to sign him in 2014, but after the Dortmund star preferred to stay put, brought in Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona instead.

The report states that Wenger tried to sign the 27-year-old German striker once again after the Gunners failed to land Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy. Reus is reportedly exactly the type of striker that Arsene Wenger wanted at the club.

The report also adds that Arsenal looking for a forward with searing pace that could play on the shoulder of defences and had good close ball control. The deal was apparently called off because of a lack of interest from Reus, even after engagement between the two sides in July and August.

Marco Reus may be a fine player, but he is hardly the type of singing Gooners would consider as ‘madness’. Perhaps the word was used colloquially, but it certainly had a large number of Gooners eager and excited till the very last minute of the summer transfer window.
