Manchester United have taken former West Ham academy player Idris Kanu on trial at the club.
Manchester Evening News have reported that Manchester United have taken up young striker Idris Kanu on trial at the club. The 16-year-old was previously a part of West Ham’s academy squad till last season, where he featured in 16 matches at the youth level for the Hammers, scoring two goals in the process.
Idris Kanu is equally adept at playing in the midfield as well as a forward with a preference to play as a centre-forward and is known for his pace and link-up play. Manchester United seem to be eager to take a closer look at the 16-year-old’s ability as Nicky Butt continues his academy overhaul in overdrive.
The former Manchester United midfielder and famously part of the Class of ’92 at the club, was tasked with the responsibility of academy overhaul, which has seen the arrival of many talented players along with the appointment of former Tottenham player Kieran McKenna as the U18 Head Coach.
Idris Kanu was named in the starting lineup by McKenna in his managerial debut as the U18 head coach at United. The English youngster did not disappoint as he found the back of the net twice on his United debut in a 5-1 thrashing of Middlesbrough to begin McKenna’s managerial career with the Red Devils on a positive note.
The player was, in general, a constant threat to the Middlesbrough defence and is likely to have impressed the United coaches including McKenna with his impact. The player seems to be an ardent follower of Manchester United, judging by his twitter account and his performance against Boro might just be enough to earn a permanent deal at the club.
If the coaches at Old Trafford had any doubt regarding the player’s ability and pedigree, the double on his debut would’ve surely allayed most, if not all of them. The 16-year-old might just become the next Kanu to strut his stuff in the Premier League in the near future, as his future is seemingly pointing north in terms of his career graph.
These are indeed exciting times for Manchester United fans as they have seen the club add the likes of Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to their first-team squad, but their transfer overtures at the youth level have not been too far from their first-team exploits.
The club has added the likes of Nishan Burkart, Tahith Chong, Joshua Bohui while also being linked with a host of other names with all the players billed as a future superstar and it looks like Idris Kanu is set to be the latest permanent addition to an already glittering United academy squad.
