Jesse Lingard reveals key to his United success; aims for 10 goals and two trophies this season

Manchester United academy product Jesse Lingard revealed confidence as the key to his success in the first-team fold at Old Trafford.

Jesse Lingard has been the talk of the town for all Manchester United fans recently. The Warrington-born midfielder has risen through the ranks at the club and has cemented a place in the first-team setup at Old Trafford. The midfielder has seen a gradual rise in his stock over the past two seasons with the player gaining the most plaudits for his FA Cup final winner against Crystal Palace last season. That goal ended a trophy drought that had been going on since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

It was then reported that he was to be awarded a new long-term contract with a hefty rise in salary. The academy ace was at it again in the Community Shield on Sunday, scoring the opener in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Leicester City. It also saw the club win their first piece of silverware under Jose Mourinho, in his first official game in charge of the club.

The 23-year-old has been able to hold his own in the first-team squad ahead of some big names and revealed the key to his success in an exclusive interview to Inside United, the club’s official magazine, excerpts of which have been published on the club’s official website.

When asked about what facet of the game is necessary to thrive at a club as large as United and the attribute he has most improved in himself, Lingard said,“ I think it’s the confidence thing. As a younger player, your first few games are always going to be nervy but my confidence grew the more I played there.”

The youngster was also clear about his ambitions for the season ahead as he continued to develop a penchant for trophies. He said,“ My aim is to score over 10 goals and win at least two trophies. That would be a good season!”

Jesse Lingard looks like he is brimming with confidence, which could only mean positive things for the club, the player himself and manager Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese would have been impressed by the wonderful solo goal the player scored against Leicester, and it looks plausible that Lingard is set to play a key role in the former Chelsea manager’s debut season at Old Trafford.
