Real Madrid have reportedly turned their attention to Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti.

Spanish publication Sport have claimed that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is enraged at losing out Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes to arch-rivals Barcelona and has instead turned his attention towards Italian midfielder Marco Verratti. The report has further revealed that Perez is willing to spend €50m on Verratti but Paris Saint-Germain are not entertaining any offers for the midfielder. New PSG manager Unai Emery reportedly values the maestro and sees him as a key player in his squad.

The report adds that amidst clouds over FIFA’s pending transfer embargo, Real Madrid want to provide manager Zinedine Zidane with three “top signings” as the Frenchman prepares for his first full season in charge of Los Blancos. The hierarchy has so far managed to sign only one, after they exercised their buyback option to sign Alvaro Morata from Juventus.

Marco Verratti has become a cornerstone for Paris Saint-Germain ever since joining from his hometown club Pescara. The Italian’s performances have drawn attention of top clubs, with Manchester United rumoured to be preparing a €100m bid for him. The move, though, has failed to materialise as United have shifted their focus to Juventus superstar Paul Pogba.

Verratti is only 23 years of age and could become an integral part of Zidane’s side for years to come if Real Madrid do decide to buy the player. But Zidane must be aware that the defensive aspect of the midfielder’s game is weak compared to other creative players playing in the same position and there seems to be no room to accommodate the player into the attack at the Santiago Bernabeu.

This seems more of a power move by Florentino Perez to show up the hierarchy at Barcelona after they snatched Andre Gomes from Real Madrid’s hands. The transfer window, though, has still some time to go before it shuts down and the move might still happen, juging by Florentino Perez’s history of signing star players without caring too much of how the manager would be able to incorporate the player into his first-team setup.
