Transfer News: Santos accept €20m Juventus bid for Arsenal and Chelsea target Gabigol

Santos have reportedly accepted Juventus’ €20m bid for star striker Gabigol.

Brazilian media outlet Globoesporte have claimed that Juventus have set their eyes on Santos striker Gabigol and that the Bianconeri have had a €20m bid accepted for the forward. The report adds that Barcelona have first refusal on the player and Santos would need to inform the Catalan club of the bid before moving to the advanced stages of the deal.

Santos president Modesto Roma talked to Globoesporte explaining the situation surrounding the future of their young starlet.

We sent a letter to Wagner [Ribeiro, player’s agent], Valdemir and Lindalva [player’s parents] with the terms [of the bid]. Santos is now waiting to see their position,” he told the Brazilian outlet.

Modesto was quick, however, to remind that Barcelona must be contacted before proceeding as they had the first refusal on the player and could choose to match or outbid the Serie A champions.

If they are interested, we will proceed with the next steps — which includes consulting Barcelona [which has priority and can outbid].

Gabigol is currently preparing to represent Brazil in the Rio Olympics and it is reported that the forward will talk to his family and agent before giving his consent on the Juventus bid. The report, however, added that a decision had to be communicated to Santos by the end of Tuesday.

It is worth noting that Santos own just 40% of the forward’s economic rights but would net at least €15m from the deal with the player netting around €2m. He would, however, need to relinquish his rights – which currently stand at 40% – in order to facilitate a transfer. The rest 20% is owned by Doyen Sports and the money owed to them for their share would be deposited in court.

Gabigol has been on the radar of Premier League clubs Arsenal and Chelsea. Arsenal have been linked with numerous strikers in the transfer window and were also reported to be heavily interested in Gabigol. The news has since died down and Chelsea appeared to be the front-runners for the signature of the Brazilian starlet with the Blues having a £25.7m bid rejected for the forward.

Juventus have now stolen a march on the Premier League duo and made the offer for Gabigol despite the almost-imminent arrival of Gonzalo Higuain. However, Barcelona have been searching, in vain, for a striker to add to the squad and have been linked to Gabigol on earlier occasions. The Blaugranes were close to the capture of Kevin Gameiro, but with the arrival of Atletico Madrid in the transfer battle with a late bid, Luis Enrique might just choose to turn his attention to Santos and exercise the club’s first refusal on the Brazilian sensation.
