Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he has spoken to club president Florentino Perez about a potential contract renewal this summer.
The Portuguese superstar is fresh off a victorious Euro 2016 campaign, which was the country’s first ever major tournament victory. There had been speculation surrounding Ronaldo’s future at Real Madrid, particularly at the beginning of this past season, but the player and his agent Jorge Mendes have maintained that retiring at Real Madrid is the Portugal captain’s aim.
FourFourTwo have reported that the world class forward is keen to end speculation regarding his future by signing a new contract with Real Madrid. The Portuguese international’s existing deal is due to expire in June 2018, but Ronaldo is reportedly keen to hold talks over a potential contract renewal to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The report cites Spanish publication AS, who quote Ronaldo confirming that he will sit down for talks over a new contract with president Florentino Perez in the near future.
“I spoke to the president [Florentino Perez] on the phone and when I get back to Madrid, we’ll talk [over a new deal],” Ronaldo is reported to have said. The 31-year-old was quick to add that he is looking forward to extending his stay at Real Madrid. Regarding the extension, he added, “Obviously it’s something I want.”
The striker is currently on an extended holiday after suffering a knee injury in Portugal’s Euro 2016 final win over hosts France. Real Madrid will most likely miss Ronaldo due to the injury for the UEFA Super Cup match on August 9 against Sevilla.
The Portuguese has enjoyed the last couple of years with Real Madrid, with the club beating their hometown rivals Atletico Madrid in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals en route to a historic UnDecima. The news would be music to the ears of the Real Madrid faithful, who will be hoping the Portuguese continues his hot streak at the Spanish capital and leads them to many more trophies in the future.
