Despite the lack of any big name signings in the summer, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes that even the lesser-known players could make a name for themselves once the season begins.
Jurgen Klopp recently signed an extension with Liverpool, which would see him remain at the club until 2022. Upon hearing this, Liverpool fans erupted with joy, and are hopeful that the German coach will turn fortunes around for their side. The Reds have been relatively busy in the transfer window, signing a number of promising youngsters, but the big-name signings are something what the fans are crying out for.
According to the Daily Mail, Klopp addressed the doubts regarding his transfer policy.
“This period in every year is one of a lot of expectations. Everyone expects big names and a big improvement because of big names.
“Some clubs have already done a lot (of transfer business) but you cannot prove at this moment what’s really right. You only have to look at the European Championships,” stated the Liverpool manager.
‘There were wonderful examples of what football really is — about building a team, creating a bond between the team, supporters and whole countries.’
Liverpool’s most significant signing this summer has been that of Senagelese midfielder Sadio Mane for a reported £34 million from Southampton. However, the Reds’ transfer activity has been ongoing before the transfer window commenced. Schalke confirmed the departure of their defender Joel Matip to Liverpool on a free transfer back in February, while the arrival of Serbian midfielder Marko Grujic was confirmed in the month of December last year. They have also signed German goalkeeper Loris Karius from Klopp’s former club FSV Mainz.
The Reds’ transfer business so far has shown some good decision making and foresight from Jurgen Klopp. The signing of Matip on a free transfer could probably turn out to be one of the signings of the season, as the Cameroonian possesses the ability to fill in the void left by the side’s most experienced defenders in Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure. Bringing in Karius seems like a smart move on the part of Klopp, given current number one Simon Mignolet’s unconvincing performances in goal.
Klopp may not have signed the sort of big names that the Premier League clubs are known to go for every summer, but his astute recruitment could take the Reds to another level this coming season.
