Transfer News: AC Milan Chasing Real Defender Alvaro Arbeloa

Spanish defender Alavaro Arbeloa seems to be a possible name we could see don the AC Milan jersey next season. Arbeloa’s contract with Real Madrid is supposed to expire soon and Milan are reportedly interested to snap up the defender from the Los Blancos.

Spanish newspaper Marca claims that former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa is on his way out of Real Madrid and could be on his way to AC Milan (via IFD). Arbeloa who was an academy player at Real, moved to Deportivo and eventually to Liverpool where he made his name playing under Rafael Benitez.

Vincenzo Montella is set to take over what would potentially be a new Milan side, Arbeloa could provide the experience they need at the back. With the departure of the two veterans Alex and Mexes both of whom are out of contract and expected to depart to their native countries for playing opportunities, Arbeloa could replace one of them in the Rossoneri back-line (via CMC).

Arbeloa who plays predominantly as a right-back, is perhaps being considered keeping in mind a possible (perhaps imminent departure) of Milan prodigy Mattia De Sciglio to Juventus or Bayern Munich. The current Real Madrid defender can also deputize as a centre-back, and would give his new employers a dynamic option defensively.

The Formation

Montella who has experimented with various formations over his career spanning over five years in Italy, will most likely try out the 3-5-2 which he employed successfully at Fiorentina, according to reports in Italy. With Paletta likely to return and pair up with Romagnoli (and maybe Zapata in case of a back 3), Milan would need some quality and experience in defence.

However, Arbeloa has received many offers from several clubs including clubs from England. The newly relegated Newcastle United are also reportedly interested in his services as Rafael Benitez has formerly worked with him during their time at Liverpool. But, by the looks of things, Arbeloa seems to have prioritized a move to Milan.
