Bayern Munich reject Real Madrid’s €50 million offer for David Alaba

Real Madrid have reportedly failed with a huge offer for Bayern Munich star David Alaba.

Mere days after winning their 11th Champions League title, Real Madrid are looking for another Galactico to add to their already impressive roster.

Since arriving at Bayern Munich in 2008, Alaba has progressed through the club’s youth ranks and after a loan spell in Hoffenheim, has gone on to establish himself in the starting lineup for the Bavarians. He is now one of the best defenders in the world and has also gone on to be named in the UEFA Team of the Year for the past three seasons.

According to a report in Spanish newspaper AS, Real Madrid tabled a €50 million offer for the Austrian fullback, which Bayern promptly turned down. Alaba signed a contract extension last year which would see him stay at the Allianz Arena till 2021.

The report states that Real’s sporting director Jose Angel Sanchez and David Alaba’s father George have held meetings in Munich to discuss the possibility of a move. Bayern reportedly will not entertain any offers below €80 million for their young star.

Alaba’s versatility makes him an attractive option

Real Madrid are reported to be a fan of the Alaba’s versatility. The 23-year-old can be deployed at centre-back, left-back and even in midfield. The Guardian reported that the Austrian international has also been linked with a move to Barcelona this past season. He shares similar traits to Real Madrid’s current first-choice left-back Marcelo.

This raises doubts over the future of the Brazilian. He has spent nine years at the club since arriving from Fluminense in 2007. In 2015, he signed a contract extension with Real Madrid which runs till 2020. It is unlikely that the Austrian will be brought in as a direct replacement for Marcelo — the 23-year-old could well be a midfield option or even an emergency left winger when necessary. Even though they have been rejected, the Spanish side continue to be undeterred in their efforts to bring the Austria international to the Spanish capital.
