Chelsea FC and Manchester United target Edinson Cavani expresses desire to join Atletico Madrid

Uruguay international Edinson Cavani, who is dissatisfied with the current scenario at PSG, has reignited speculation regarding his future by hinting that he would welcome a chance to work with fellow South American Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid.

Amid interest from Chelsea, who continue to look for a striker given the unreliability of Diego Costa, and Manchester United, who lacked a consistent goalscorer last season, PSG striker Edinson Cavani has hinted at a potential move to La Liga side Atletico Madrid instead. In a recent interview with Spanish newspaper Marca, Cavani revealed his admiration for Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid.

“It’s a really competitive team that has demonstrated interest in me and that pleases me, you never know if things could go further,” said the Uruguyan. “Football is always changing and you never know.”

He refused to go any further however, acknowledging his responsibility to PSG in light of the interest. “Right now I’m a PSG player and I have to respect that; it would be improper to speak more about it,” he added.

Atletico Madrid a perfect fit for Cavani

The former Napoli striker, who has his Serie A upbringing in common with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, scored 19 goals in 2015-16, helping PSG to the French Ligue 1 title this season. It was clear from his words that he is very familiar with the Atletico players as well as Simeone’s style of football.

Atletico captain Diego Godin, who is Cavani’s teammate in the Uruguayan national team, had only positive things to say about the striker. “He [Cavani] loves the club, he loves Atletico Madrid,” Godin was quoted as saying by Goal. “He loves the way we play because it’s very similar to how we play with the national team and how we understand football in Uruguay.”

Ever since his €64 million move from Napoli, Cavani has mainly been used as a winger or a second striker behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, after the departure of the big Swede, there emerged reports of El Matador renewing his contract at PSG.  Zlatan’s departure would mean that Cavani would get to play protagonist for the Parisians instead of being second fiddle. It now seems that the reality is less simple, however, as Cavani hints at a future away from Paris.
