Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel claims Red Devils have bored him ‘to death’ this season

One of Manchester United’s greatest goalkeepers of all time is the latest to speak of his disenchantment with the Red Devils this season.

Peter Schmeichel was one of the stars of the treble winning Manchester United side of 1999. The Great Dane has won it all with the Red Devils, winning five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League during his eight-year long career at Old Trafford.

Schmeichel is the latest club legend to criticize the style of play that Manchester United have adopted, claiming that the club have gone backwards since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

“Manchester United – a club that love and have followed since I was a kid – have bored me to death this season,” said the club legend, according to Sky Sports.

“We are one of those clubs that has been dragged in completely the wrong direction. We never used to play football the way we play now. We never played for 1-0 and then defend. We always went for the second goal and the third.

“All the hard work that Sir Alex put in to recover what was there from Sir Matt Busby has been undone in a very short period of time. I, as a fan, want to be winning but to entertain equally as much too. I want exciting players.”

A terrible season to be a Manchester United fan

Manchester United have had yet another poor season as they finished in fifth position, meaning they will be without Champions league football next season. While their style of play has come under some massive criticism, the results have not helped as the club crashed out of the Champions League and remained a non-entity in the Premier League. The FA Cup final on Sunday against Crystal Palace is their last chance at silverware this season.

The bulk of the blame is being placed on manager Louis van Gaal. The Dutchman’s contract at Old Trafford runs until next year, but it remains to be seen if the club can resist the growing demands of fans, pundits and former players to make a change in the hotseat sooner rather than later.
