Manchester United reignite interest in Real Madrid superstar Toni Kroos

The Real Madrid midfielder has been on the wanted list for Manchester United since his days at Bayern Munich, with manager Louis van Gaal blocking the Red Devils’ move for him in the summer of 2014.

Toni Kroos has long been a Manchester United target, and it was believed that he had even agreed a deal in principle to move to the club before David Moyes was sacked in 2014. However, the arrival of Dutchman Louis van Gaal put an end to those discussions as he was not very keen on bringing the German to Old Trafford. The World Cup winner eventually moved to Real Madrid that year for a transfer fee of £20 million.

According to reports in the Mirror, Manchester United have renewed their interest in the 26-year-old and are keen to make him one of their star signings in the coming summer transfer window. Although Kroos is a regular starter for Real Madrid, he has stated his admiration for the Premier League in the past and was even rumoured to be interested in a move away from the Spanish capital.

Kroos is valued at £40 million by transfermarkt.com and Real Madrid would be keen to extract a good profit from Manchester United for their first team player.

The writing’s on the wall

It was widely reported that Toni Kroos was on the verge of a move to Manchester United from Bayern Munich after his heroics in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. However, the man who pulled the plug on that deal was none other than incoming Dutch manager Louis van Gaal, who was held in very high regard by the board at that point of time.

Two seasons after the exciting arrival of the Dutchman though, the feelings at Old Trafford about Van Gaal have moved as further away from excitement as possible. Having been under constant criticism for the uninspiring style of play that has characterised Van Gaal’s United, finishing outside the top four could be the final straw.

The Red Devils are in the FA Cup final with a good chance to win it, but that alone will not be enough for the Dutchman to keep his job. With rumours of Jose Mourinho’s arrival reaching fever pitch, this resurgent interest in Kroos could be a sign that change is coming.
