Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insisted that the Reds are looking beyond just the Bundesliga for their transfer targets, with a host of big names from the German top division linked with a switch to Anfield in recent weeks.
Liverpool are set for a massive squad overhaul in the off season as Jurgen Klopp prepares to reshape his team in his first summer transfer window as Reds manager. A number of players have been linked with a switch to Anfield recently and the names have invariably been those of German players.
However, Klopp insisted that he had no particular interest in pursuing players from the Bundesliga, suggesting that it was much more important for a potential signing to be the right fit for the team.
“We will not not sign a player because he is German. That would be nonsense,” said Klopp, according to FourFourTwo.
“We look not only in the Bundesliga.
“We are really global at the start, but it is much more important not where the player comes from, but that it is the right player for us.”
The German revolution at Anfield
Although Liverpool will likely look beyond just Germany for transfer targets, Klopp’s knowledge of the Bundesliga and any connections he has formed during his time there could assist the Reds in their pursuit of talent from the country’s top flight. The likes of Granit Xhaka, Mario Gotze and Ilkay Gundogan have all been rumoured to be moving to Anfield, even though they two of them are key players for their respective teams.
However, the fact remains that a squad overhaul at Anfield is long overdue. Jurgen Klopp inherited an unbalanced squad from previous manager Brendan Rodgers and will be eager to have the opportunity to address issues he has with the current squad.
Although he has dismissed the speculation around Bundesliga players, Mario Gotze is reportedly on the verge of a move to Liverpool. A former player under Klopp at Dortmund, Gotze is a fringe player at Bayern and he could well head to Anfield this summer in search of first team football.
