The midfielder turned centre-back joined Manchester United in the summer of 2014, and has won all of his four games against Liverpool since then.
The Europa League round of 16 draw has thrown up some very high intensity clashes, and it doesn’t get more intense than a fixture between Manchester United and Liverpool. Ahead of the first leg of their Europa League clash on Friday, Dutchman Daley Blind had a few words to say about facing the old enemy.
“It’s a busy schedule coming up again and Liverpool will be a great game to play in, especially as it’s now in the Europa League,” said Blind, according to the Mirror.
“You’re either in or out, through to the next round or not, so it’s very important for us. They will say it’s important for them too, so we have to show we want it more.”
Daley Blind have a 100% win record against Liverpool since arriving at Old Trafford in 2014, and Blind said he wanted to keep that record going.
“Since I’ve been here, we have faced Liverpool four times and won them all – I hope we can keep up that run,” he said.
First time in Europe
This is the first time that Manchester United and Liverpool will face each other in the final. They have a long and storied rivalry, being two of the biggest English teams in the latter part of the last century. Manchester United have edged past an underachieving Liverpool team in the new millennium, but the Reds do show brief flashes of brilliance from time to time, like in the UEFA Champions League triumph of 2005.
It remains to be seen if Jurgen Klopp is the one to take the Merseysiders back to the top, both domestically and in Europe. On the other hand, Manchester United are suffering their worst run in years and have gone two seasons without major silverware. The Europa league is a priority for both clubs and it should be an interesting round of 16 match-up between two old rivals.
