With Lionel Messi recently committing his future to Barcelona, his teammate Neymar could be courting a controversial move away as he was spotted with Real Madrid officials in Zurich.
According to Spanish publication Onda Cero, the Brazilian was spotted with representatives of Barcelona’s most bitter and hated rivals after the Ballon d’Or awards in Zurich, Switzerland. While Real Madrid would definitely love to get their hands on the coveted forward, the report also speculates that this could also be a move engineered by Neymar to get a more lucrative contract from Barcelona.
Neymar wants a better contract
The Brazilian captain is well aware of the fact that should he decide to leave Barcelona, there are a number of clubs who would pay an obscene amount of wages to sign him up. Neymar is contracted with the club till 2018, but they have been negotiating a new deal for the player for a while now.
With the interest shown in him by clubs like Manchester United and Bayern Munich, Barca officials would do well to wrap up proceedings quickly, if they want to hold on to their star player for the long haul. This may involve offering him a very lucrative deal, which they should have no problem doing, considering that he is being touted to be the heir to Lionel Messi at Nou Camp.
The last time a player switched sides from Barca to Real Madrid, was Portuguese legend Luis Figo in 2000, and the subsequent response from Barca fans would have disheartened any footballer. Neymar should look up the videos of Figo’s first El Clasico as a Real Madrid player, before he even considers a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
