Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres’ career has been on the decline since he left Liverpool in 2011. However, his agent recently claimed that there are as many as 8 clubs chasing his signature, with one of them offering a deal that would make him the best paid footballer in the world.
Once his 18-month loan at Atletico Madrid is over, the 31-year-old will not be short of big money offers. According to his agent, a number of top clubs across the world are after his signature — including clubs from the free spending Chinese super league.
“Fernando and [Diego] Simeone should sit down and talk about it. The fans of Madrid don’t want Torres to be told no continually”, his representative Jose Antonio Martin was quoted as saying by The Sun.
“He has an offer that would make him the best-paid in the world. There are nuances. It all depends upon the will of the club.”
Torres wants to stay at Atletico
El Nino had signed his first professional contract for Atletico Madrid in 1999 as a 15-year-old. Torres went on to spend 7 seasons with the Rojiblancos before moving on to Liverpool in 2007. He resigned on an 18-month loan last season, but has scored for them only twice this season.
Although Martin claims that there are big money moves being made for the Spaniard, it looks like he is more intent on getting him a new deal at his boyhood club.
“The feeling I get is this is something that must be resolved, not between [club chief Miguel Angel] Gil Marin or [technical director] Andrea Berta, but rather between Simeone and Torres, who are friends”, his agent added.
“He must either tell him [Torres], ‘I am counting on you or I am not counting on you… The fans want his contract renewed and it is something that can’t be denied.”
Renewing El Nino’s contract could prove problematic for Atletico, since they cannot afford to spend much money on a player whose performances show that he’s past his prime.
