Lewandowski A ‘Candidate’ For Real Madrid, Man United Target Set To Stay: Beckenbauer

Writing in his weekly column for Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer admitted that Robert Lewandowski was a ‘candidate’ to join Real Madrid in the coming months. However, the former German international claimed that Manchester United target Thomas Müller was likely to stay put at Munich despite interest from England.

Robert Lewandowski has been linked with a high-profile move to Real Madrid as uncertainty grows over Karim Benzema’s future at the Spanish capital.

Robert Lewandowski is a possible candidate

As reported by AS, Beckenbauer spoke about the Bayern striker, admitting that he could make a move to Madrid in the light of their recent transfer ban. The Bayern Munich legend however attempted to put a stop to rumours linking Thomas Müller with a move to the English Premier League.

“Robert Lewandowski is a possible candidate to join Real Madrid.

“Thomas though has already stated that he wants to stay on at Bayern, which means that the fans love him even more than they did before.”

Expect a frenetic winter transfer window

If Beckenbauer is to be believed, one can expect a busy winter transfer window due to the ‘increased spending power’ of the Premier League clubs. FIFA’s ban on Real Madrid and Atletico could further propel transfer business this month as the two clubs attempt to navigate the sanctions imposed by the governing body.

While Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Lewandowski, it will be interesting to see if the Spanish giants will be able to convince the German champions to part with their star striker in the winter transfer window. Such a move would also put Karim Benzema’s future in jeopardy who has been enjoying a good season on the pitch so far. However, a failure to complete the move this January would put an end to Madrid’s pursuit, if the transfer sanctions were to remain in place.

Manchester United will loathe to hear Beckenbauer’s comments on Thomas Mueller who has been publicly pursued by Louis van Gaal since his arrival at Old Trafford. The German international previously admitted to being tempted by the wages that was being offered by Premier League clubs.

Despite interest from Real Madrid and Manchester United, it is unlikely that Carlo Ancelotti would sanction these transfers as it would leave a permanent dent in his arsenal for the upcoming season.
