De Gea’s Future At Old Trafford Could Depend On His Role In The Spanish National Team

David de Gea’s career at Old Trafford looks like it will never have the chance to settle down, with his future now reportedly dependent on his international career.

Although the Spaniard seems settled at Manchester United following the last minute scuppering of his move to Real Madrid last summer, a new factor has reportedly come into play. De Gea signed a new, lucrative 4-year contract with the Red Devils this season, and has professed his desire to continue playing for the club to the media recently. But it looks like there’s only one way the club can be sure of keeping their star player.

An ESPN report stated that, “David De Gea’s Manchester United future looks set to hinge on whether he starts for Spain at Euro 2016, with sources telling ESPN FC that the Old Trafford club are confident of keeping the goalkeeper if he gets Vicente del Bosque’s No. 1 spot.”

Time for a change

Current Spanish number one Iker Casillas was one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, but his form has been on a steady decline since he lead Spain to that string of international triumphs that included one World Cup and two Euros. He was even ousted from Real Madrid, with Los Blancos eager to sign De Gea as a replacement, which didn’t work out for them last summer.

Casillas has made a number of high profile mistakes for present club FC Porto this season. But Spain coach Vicente del Bosque continues to put the 34-year-old above all the others in the pecking order because of his illustrious history.

David de Gea deserves it

Although Manchester United may not be setting Europe on fire, their goalkeeper certainly is. De Gea has been putting in world class performances day in and day out for the Red Devils. He has often been the single factor that has helped his team avoid defeat.

De Gea was only behind Manuel Neuer in this years FIFPro team of the year, and he has definitely grown into one of the best in the world over the past couple of seasons. Del Bosque must seriously consider the Manchester Untied keeper for the number one role, if he wants to avoid coming across as biased.
