Louis van Gaal could leave Manchester United this summer, with Mourinho primed to take over

According to reports in England, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal could quit at the end of the season due to the ‘mounting pressure of the job’.

Louis van Gaal has come under fire from Manchester United fans, neutrals and pundits alike for the soporific nature of his team’s football, as well as his failure in the UEFA Champions League, and to a large extent also the Premier League with the Red Devils currently out of the top four spots.

The Dutchman suggested earlier this season that he could leave of his own accord at some point in the future, and according to a report in the Daily Mirror, that is just what might happen at the end of this season.

The report cites ‘sources in Holland’, who claim that Van Gaal’s family are worried about how the pressure and criticism is affecting the 64-year-old. The former Bayern Munich manager is contracted to Manchester United till 2017, but sources close to him suggest that he may well have had enough already.

With former Chelsea FC manager and Louis van Gaal disciple José Mourinho currently looking for a club to manage, the Red Devils may not be too sorry to see the Dutchman depart, although there is resistance to the Portuguese from some quarters within United due to his controversial nature and style of management.

Manchester United have a tough decision to make in the summer

Although some United fans would like to see Louis van Gaal remain in charge till the end of his contract before handing over the reigns to Ryan Giggs, others dismiss it as romanticism, and would like to see the club appoint one of the best managers in the world in Mourinho will he is still available.

The Red Devils’ hierarchy could well be wrestling with that precise conundrum, and a decision will likely depend on how the rest of Manchester United’s season pans out. If Louis van Gaal is able to finish in the top four and go far in the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League, he could well be given the opportunity to continue establishing his philosophy next season.
