David de Gea, who has recently been linked to Real Madrid, recently spoke about how much he appreciated Manchester United fans and how he hopes to one day do great things for the club.
One of the biggest moments for the Red Devils’ fans last summer came when David de Gea returned to action for the club against bitter rivals Liverpool, after his transfer to Real Madrid came unglued in the last minute.
“I cannot describe how I felt in that moment,” said the Spaniard, speaking to Sky Sports about the moment when he returned to play for the club after the transfer fiasco.
“In another country, at another club, the fans would not be the same as at Manchester United. They are some of the best in the world, it was unbelievable.”
The new goalkeeping legend at Old Trafford
De Gea was also asked about his thoughts on Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, who were two of the best Manchester United goalkeepers of all time and considered the best of their time. He said that he hoped to emulate their success and reach that level for the Red Devils.
“They were the greatest goalkeepers in the Premier League, they are legends for this club and that is what I want.”, he said.
De Gea was beaten by Manuel Neuer in the votes for the FIFpro World XI keeper, but he seems unperturbed and ready to better his game and help his club back to the pinnacle of European club football.
“I train every day to be the best goalkeeper in the world, that is my aim… I’m not sure who the best is now, but it’s what I want. Also, to win trophies for Manchester United,” he said.
