AS Roma Declares High Ambitions By Announcing The Return Of Luciano Spalletti As Their Manager

AS Roma have made their intentions quite clear, as they announced the return of Luciano Spalletti as the manager of the club, after the sacking of former coach Rudi Garcia on Wednesday.

Spalletti has been out of a job for almost two years now, and has quickly been snapped up by AS Roma, soon after firing former coach Garcia. AS Roma made the announcement on their social media on Thursday.

Interestingly, AS Roma had last won a title under the reign of Spaletti, when they lifted the Coppa Italia in back-to-back seasons in 2006/07 and 2007/08. This is a clear indication by the Roma management that they want their team to lift more silverware.

“I am extremely pleased to say welcome back to Roma to Luciano Spalletti,” said club president James Pallotta on their official website. “He’s a winning coach who has picked up a long line of successes. We can’t wait to work together to take Roma to where we believe they deserve to be.”

Spalletti himself seemed to be beaming at the opportunity of becoming the manager of the Giallorossi once again, after a long spell in Russia with Zenit St Petersburg.

“I’m emotional because I know the value of this city, this club and this squad,” he said. “To work with such valuable people really motivates me.”

Giallorossi looking towards Europe

With the signing of Spalletti, AS Roma would be looking to climb up above Fiorentina and Inter Milan into one of the Champions League qualification spots on the Serie A table. Also, they would be looking for Spaletti to turn their fortune around in time to be able to take on the mighty Real Madrid in the Round of 16 on the Champions League.

“There are still plenty of games to be played, both in Italy and in Europe this season,” said AS Roma CEO Italo Zanzi. “The arrival of Luciano Spalletti can only increase the faith that we already have in our squad.”

With half a month still left for the January transfer window to be closed, we could very well expect some kind of activity in the transfer market from Spalletti, who would surely be looking to get some of his familiar faces into the Roma dressing room.
