Manchester United Confirmed Lineup vs Liverpool: McTominay in for Matic; Lingard on the bench

In a surprise change, Manchester United academy graduate Scott McTominay gets the nod in midfield against Liverpool, in place of Nemanja Matic.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made two changes to the side that beat Chelsea in the FA Cup on Monday for the high-profile encounter against arch-rivals Liverpool.

In what was an expected alteration, David de Gea returns between the sticks for Manchester United, replacing Sergio Romero. No tweaks in defence have been made, however, with Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw all keeping their places in the starting XI. Eric Bailly and Diogo Dalot provide cover on the bench.

But the biggest surprise for Sunday’s game is that Scott McTominay starts in the three-man midfield for Manchester United, replacing Serbian powerhouse Nemanja Matic, who does not even make it to the matchday squad. Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera feature from kick-off again.

There are no changes in attack for the Red Devils, with Romelu Lukaku, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford all holding on to their places in the lineup. Anthony Martial seems to have not recovered from his injury and misses out of the squad, but fellow attacker Jesse Lingard is fit again and makes the bench, along with Alexis Sanchez.
