Jose Mourinho and Manchester United came to terms with reality as they were thumped 4-1 by an adept Borussia Dortmund side in the International Champions Cup.
It was a rough beginning to Manchester United’s pre-season tour as they came out short against a Borussia Dortmund side that played an attacking brand of football from the outset. Jose Mourinho’s men began the game on the back foot, and played catch-up for the most part. Only a handful of United players stood out, while several came under the cosh, and were scrutinized for a lacklustre performance.
Here’s how the game panned out on social media:
*United beat Wigan:”We are gonna win the league. Mkhi is a baller.”
*United lose to Dortmund:”Pre season means nothing. 20 TIMES 20 TIMES.”

Why do people care about the result of a pre season friendly?
LVG won almost every friendly as United manager as it counted for nowt!#MUFC— The Mighty Elks (@TheMightyElks) July 22, 2016
Too many impatient, demanding United fans on here. Preseason is for experimenting, gaining fitness etc. Save the results for the league!

United fans need to get used to this

mourinho should have brought ibra to the pre-season tournament, easily 9-0 to united

Memphis Depay was deployed as a number nine, and looked off the pace on a number of occasions as he failed to test Roman Weidenfeller in the Dortmund goal. Defender Phil Jones and keeper Sam Johnstone too had a torrid game, and were the targets of some roasting on Twitter:
I’ve struggled through 45 mins of United v BVB. Jones is still terrible. Depay has been trash in preseason so far. The conditions are awful.
— Alex Shaw (@AlexShawESPN) July 22, 2016
Also, can someone please help me understand what Phil Jones is still looking for at United?
— hannie (@Sawamss) July 22, 2016
The fact it’s pre season doesn’t excuse the fact that Phil Jones and Memphis are useless
— Connor (@DDGSaves) July 22, 2016
Valencia, Memphis & Johnstone have been trash so far. Luckily none will be in the starting XI to face Bournemouth.
— Melvin S7ven (@MelvinS7ven) July 22, 2016
Memphis and Lingard deserve a chance to prove themselves at Nottingham Forest. #MUFC
— Limo (@Limo_alan) July 22, 2016
Sam Johnstone just lives for pre season appearances then goes into hiding during the season
— Jordan (@JordaanBroown) July 22, 2016
… And that’s why Sam Johnstone isn’t the first or second keeper in Manchester United. Awful save and clearing #mutour

Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele showcased on Friday why he was signed by manager Thomas Tuchel, after a blistering performance was capped by a magnificent solo goal. Fans obviously loved the goal, and spoke highly of the Frenchman.

Deschamps better keep his eyes on Ousmane Dembélé, kid’s gonna be mega this season.
— Ross (@ManCityRoss) July 22, 2016
3-0! Ousmane Dembele twists and turns and Dortmund are in full control against Man United.

An overall team performance was lauded by the footballing world:
Chinese Reds outnumbered the #BvB yellows by 15 to 1
At end United players went straight down tunnel & Dortmund players went to their fans— Peter Bolton (@PeterBolton3) July 22, 2016
Take Lewandowski, take Hummels, take Gundogan, yet, Dortmund will still smash top teams. Sometimes you’ve just got to admire that….
— Kloppholic (@Kloppholic) July 22, 2016
It was only a friendly but certainly impressive from dortmund
— Alex Sergacome (@Alex_AMS96) July 22, 2016
Dortmund’s young flers are so good they’re scary. Emre Mor, Pulisic, Leitner, Dembele. Impressive.
