In a double swoop, FC Bayern Munich announced the signings of long-term Manchester United target Renato Sanches and Mats Hummels today. The fans took to twitter expressing their surprise at the former and even speculated how Sanches’s United snub means a blow to the prospects of Jose Mourinho taking the reigns at Old Trafford.
Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson three years ago, the Red Devils have endured a steady decline down the pecking order of English football supremacy. Ever since, as a part of their ‘rebuilding’ project the side has been linked with a move for a number of major football players in the world as United looked to spend big money on bringing the creme-de-la-creme to Old Trafford. One among such long-term targets was Benfica’s highly rated midfielder, Renato Sanches whom the Manchester club had been scouting for a while.
However when Bayern Munich snapped up the youngster from the grasp of the Red Devils today, fans of the club took to Twitter to lash out at Ed Woodward. With both the Portuguese and English media force-feeding Sanches to United rumours over the last few months, his move to Bayern all of a sudden came as a rude shock with the fans questioning how Woodward managed to let go off a long-term target so easily.

Ed Woodward could learn a thing or two from Bayern about how football transfer business could be done.

Ed Woodward can’t tie his own laces. The problems backstage are deeper than our manager.

Ed Woodward will be angrily speed-dialling Jorge Mendes this morning

Window hasn’t even opened yet and already Ed Woodward showing total incompetence. Lost out on so many players. He’s criminally useless.

While some reached for Woodward’s head, others speculated on Jorge Mendes’ influence in the whole matter and worried over its implications on Jose Mourinho’s supposed switch to Old Trafford in the summer. Mendes happens to be the agent of both Sanches and Mourinho and if there was a breakdown of talks with the club over Sanches, chances are that the Portugese wouldn’t be moving there either. And with Louis Van Gaal closer to the possibility of landing the club it’s first piece of silverware since his arrival, it seems increasingly likely the Dutchman will stay on another year at the Red half of Manchester.
One has to wonder; Man United were interested, Jorge Mendes is his agent. Does this indicate a breakdown in the Mourinho negotiations?

This also leads me to believe that LVG is staying. No José, no Jorge Mendes on side, no Renato Sanches
