Salgaocar FC would be kicking themselves after throwing away an opportunity to get a draw out of the away match against title challengers East Bengal on Sunday.
The Greens had done well to cancel out Md Rafique’s goal in the second half through a deflected header from Darryl Duffy. However, East Bengal came back strongly in the last 10 minutes, as Bello Rasaq scored the winner. Salgaocar themselves had their chances in the dying minutes of the match, but East Bengal custodian Luis Barretto was up to the mark to make the saves.
One big talking point for Salgaocar is that they cannot field star froward Jackichand Singh for the full 90 minutes, due to a niggling injury. Manager Santosh Kashyap confirmed after the match that Jackichand would mostly be featuring from the bench for the rest of the season due to the injury.
“Jackichand is still not a 100% fit because he requires ankle surgery at the end of the season and he will not be able to feature for 90 minutes in a game,” said Kashyap.
Kashyap turning things around
Kashyap was appointed as the Salgaocar head coach after four consecutive defeats for the Greens under previous manager Malcolm Thomson. Kashyap, who has also briefly coached East Bengal’s arch rivals Mohun Bagan, seems to have turned things around for the club, with two draws and a win, which has taken them out of the relegation zone on the I-League table. In spite of tasting defeat for the first time in his reign at Salgaocar, Kashyap believes that the team is showing signs of good football.
“Good things are happening, it is just my fourth match, today was unfortunate but half of the league is still left,” said Kashyap. “I like to play attacking football and that is why I went in with three strikers. I had given maximum freedom to all players and I am proud of my boys.”
