Sporting Clube de Goa are one of the teams trying to break into the top three of the I-League, but the difference between them and Mohun Bagan was clear to see, as the Mariners nicked a 1-0 victory to cement their position at the top on Saturday.
Sporting coach Mateus Costa was certainly impressed by the strength and depth of the Mohun Bagan side, and said that this victory could prove to be a great morale booster for the Mariners, who are yet to be beaten in the I-League so far this season.
“It is still a long way. The way they are playing now it is definitely possible. Today’s victory will definitely be a boost [for Mohun Bagan],” said Costa.
The Mohun Bagan defence, that has come under a lot of criticism this season, were successful in keeping their former striker Odafa Okolie at bay during the match. However, Costa believes that Odafa played well in spite of all the attention he got from the opposition defence.
“It’s not that [we could not create enough chances], there were some nice balls for Odafa towards the end. Odafa was keeping the ball, playing passes upwards,” said Costa.
Sporting knocking on Asian spots
Sporting Clube had a brilliant chance of going level with third-placed team East Bengal, if they would have been able to get a win in the Mohun Bagan match. Although the narrow loss sets them back a bit, Costa would be reassured by the fact that his team are four points off from an AFC Cup spot, and would be spurring his team on to climb further up the I-League table to get there.
