Shillong Lajong have not had a great track record at the Barasat Stadium, but managed to get a point against defending champions Mohun Bagan, on Wednesday. Manager Thagboi Singto lauded his team’s efforts, even saying that they should have been able to take all the three points from the match.
The side from the North East got off to a great start in the first half, and even went into the lead with a goal from Chinglensana Konsham. However a second half strike by Mohun Bagan striker Jeje Lalpekhlua leveled the score up.
In spite of losing out on the chance to inflict the first I-League defeat of the season on Mohun Bagan, Lajong coach Singto was all praises for his team.
“Enough has been said about Mohun Bagan. But today [I want to] talk about my team,” said Singto. “As a team, I think we stuck to the plans and of course in the second half Mohun Bagan came back. We were a bit lucky, I would say. There were some shots on the crossbar and all.
“I think we [got] stuck [in there]. It was always going to be difficult against Mohun Bagan. Tough team, tough players, good Indian and foreign players, I have said this before,” he further continued. “But credit goes to my team. All the players fought like lions.”
Shillong Lajong well and truly in mid table
This result by Lajong means that they have now well and truly cemented their place as one of the two mid-table clubs, along with Mumbai FC. While both the clubs are currently on nine points, they are five points away from the relegation zone. On the other hand, they are also five points away from the top three clubs (Mohun Bagan, Bengaluru FC and East Bengal), which firmly establishes both the clubs as the mid-table players in this season’s I-League.
Lajong now have two back-to-back games against top club DSK Shivajians, which means that they would have a good chance of getting some crucial points on the board, before welcoming title challengers Bengaluru FC in a difficult home fixture.
