Manchester United considering Sebastian Hoeness as Michael Carrick replacement

Manchester United are interested in acquiring the services of VfB Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness to replace Michael Carrick.

According to The Independent, Manchester United are considering Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick, with the German coach emerging as one of the candidates admired by the club’s decision-makers.

Manchester United’s hierarchy remain uncertain about Carrick’s long-term future despite the team’s recent 3-2 victory over Roma, which ended a difficult run of 10 matches without a win. The result has eased some of the pressure on the Englishman, but questions surrounding his position have not disappeared.

Eddie Howe is viewed as less promising than before, while Hoeness is an emerging prospect. However, appointing the Stuttgart manager would still represent a significant gamble, similar to the decision to bring in Ruben Amorim.

The 44-year-old has been in charge of Stuttgart since 2023 and has established himself as one of the highly regarded young managers in German football. He has overseen 166 matches at the club, averaging 1.80 points per game, and has earned recognition for developing an attractive, possession-based approach.

Why Sebastian Hoeness could be a great fit for Manchester United

The Stuttgart manager’s tactical approach could appeal to Manchester United’s hierarchy, particularly his emphasis on controlling possession, attacking with intensity and adapting his system according to the opposition. His ability to combine patient build-up play with direct attacking transitions is another quality that could suit the demands of the Premier League.

There are also encouraging examples of Bundesliga managers making successful transitions to English football. Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, and Fabian Hurzeler have demonstrated that experience in Germany can provide a strong foundation.

Manchester United’s interest in Hoeness is not entirely new, as the German tactician was linked with the Old Trafford job in 2024. However, he turned down the role, preferring to remain at Stuttgart, where he came up the ranks as a manager.

A fresh approach could produce a different outcome, although convincing him to leave midway through a season would not necessarily be straightforward. Nevertheless, Manchester United must first resolve their situation with Carrick.

The victory over AS Roma has bought the manager some breathing room, but the upcoming meeting with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa could prove another important examination. For Hoeness, any move would represent a significant career step.
