Roberto De Zerbi friendship with Piero Ausilio could seal Tottenham move

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi might play a big part in the club’s pursuit of former Inter Milan chief Piero Ausilio.

Tottenham are exploring a move for former Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio, with Roberto De Zerbi’s close friendship potentially key to convincing him to join the Premier League, as per an update on Italian outlet Tuttosport via Sport Witness.

Ausilio’s track record of value-finding in constrained markets and developing a transfer structure might be exactly what Spurs need after a summer of massive changes.

Tottenham have emerged as one of the most interesting destinations for the 54-year-old, with the North London club having previously made contact regarding a potential appointment. Spurs could revisit the possibility in the coming period.

De Zerbi could convince Ausilio to move to England

De Zerbi’s close friendship with Ausilio, and the Tottenham manager’s growing influence in recruitment and squad-building at the North London club, could now make a move feasible; Ausilio would arrive already versed in De Zerbi’s methods.

Ausilio’s departure from Inter was accelerated by disagreements over his next contract. The club’s Oaktree ownership offered him a one-year extension at the end of last season, while Ausilio wanted a longer three-year commitment and greater backing. With Oaktree refusing to back his request, he is now looking for a new challenge.

A move to Tottenham would give Ausilio an opportunity to bring his extensive recruitment experience to the Premier League. During his long spell at Inter, Ausilio operated under financial constraints but constructed competitive squads through smart recruitment, helping the club win three league titles and earning respect as one of European football’s most capable sporting directors.

The North London club already have Johan Lange in the sporting director role, but their previous structure demonstrates that another senior figure could operate alongside the existing hierarchy. Spurs adopted a co-sporting director model in October 2025, with Lange working alongside Fabio Paratici before the latter left at the start of 2026.

With Paratici’s position still vacant, Tottenham have looked at several candidates, including Sebastian Kehl before a move was ruled out. Ausilio could provide the experience and recruitment direction required during the club’s ongoing rebuild, while his friendship with De Zerbi could make the transition particularly appealing.
