Five things we learned from Matchday 35 of La Liga 2025/26

La Liga delivered defining moments at both ends of the table, with Barcelona officially crowned champions while the relegation battle took another dramatic turn.

Matchday 35 of the 2025/26 La Liga season saw Barcelona secure the title in style with a commanding Clasico win over Real Madrid at Camp Nou. Hansi Flick’s team not only celebrated the league triumph in front of their biggest rivals but also kept alive their hopes of reaching the 100-point mark.

Elsewhere, Real Oviedo became the first team to suffer relegation from the Spanish top flight, while Levante boosted their survival hopes thanks to a dramatic late winner from Karl Etta Eyong. Espanyol’s miserable run also continued, dragging them further into the relegation scrap. Here are five key takeaways from Matchday 35 of the La Liga season.

Barcelona clinch title; set sights on 100-point mark

Barcelona went into the Clasico against Real Madrid knowing that a point would be enough to clinch the league title. They were already 11 points clear at the top of the table, and with another dominant display, the difference now is 14 points.

While El Clasico is the most anticipated game of the season, it did not live up to the hype this time around as the Catalan giants dominated proceedings and came out on top without much trouble. A sensational free-kick by Marcus Rashford and a well-worked goal by Ferran Torres within the first 20 minutes helped them win 2-0 on the night.

Barcelona now have 91 points in their 35 outings. While they have successfully defended their title, Hansi Flick’s team will now look to create history by winning the last three games and reaching the 100-point mark, which has only been breached twice in the history of La Liga (2012 Real Madrid, 2013 Barcelona).

Real Madrid suffer humiliation at Camp Nou

While Real Madrid had nothing to play for heading into the Clasico, there was pride at stake, and they could have put up a much better performance than they actually did. The Merengues were without quite a few first-team stars, but there was still enough quality on the pitch to at least challenge the Catalan giants.

They were clearly the second-best team on the night. The fans would have expected them to push harder to avoid humiliation at the hands of Barcelona. Unfortunately, the team in white allowed Hansi Flick’s team to ease past them and watched them celebrate and lift the title in front of their eyes.

Given what had happened between Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni in the training ground prior to this fixture, Los Blancos had a chance to win and change the narrative. However, they failed in some fashion.

Real Oviedo officially relegated

Real Oviedo, who fought hard to secure promotion to the Spanish top flight, have failed to survive despite all their efforts. While they spent the majority of the season in the relegation zone, Oviedo did put up a fight in the final weeks.

They won three and drew two of their last eight league outings to keep their survival hopes alive. However, going winless in their last four games proved costly. Heading into Matchday 35, they needed to beat Getafe at all costs.

But they could only manage a goalless draw, and with 17th-placed Girona securing a point against Rayo Vallecano, the gap to safety stretched to ten points, ruling out any mathematical chance of survival with just three games remaining.

Etta Eyong keeps Levante’s survival hopes alive

The highly sought-after Karl Etta Eyong bagged a 90th-minute winner to keep Levante firmly in the race for survival. Levante earned three very important points with a 3-2 win over Osasuna last time out.

While the visitors took a 2-0 lead, Levante bounced back in some fashion. Both teams were level (2-2) heading into the break. The home team dominated the show in the second half, but they were not clinical enough in the final third.

Right at the end of regulation time, Etta Eyong stepped up and scored one of the most important goals of their season. With five teams in front of them dropping points, Levante now have a very good chance of survival despite being 19th on the table. Only three points separate them, and 14th-placed Elche, heading into the last three games.

Espanyol’s tragic fall continues

From pushing for a European spot to fighting for survival in the top flight, Espanyol have endured quite a dramatic downfall in 2026. Until the very end of last year, they were one of the most in-form teams in the competition. However, a lot has changed since the turn of the calendar.

Espanyol have not won a single league game in 2026, and they have fallen to 16th on the points table. They squared up against Sevilla, hoping to bring an end to their winless run, but ended up losing 2-1. The Periquitos have lost four out of their last five league games, and they are only two points clear of the drop zone.
