Matchday 30 of La Liga could prove to be a defining turning point, with the title race taking a decisive swing and the battle for survival heating up.
With just eight games remaining, the margin for error in the 2025/26 La Liga title race is almost non-existent. Barcelona took full advantage of Real Madrid’s slip-up to move a step closer to defending their crown, while Los Blancos may have seen their title hopes take a major hit after a costly defeat.
Elsewhere, the fight for survival continues to intensify, with Sevilla being dragged back into the mix following a poor run of form. At the same time, teams like Getafe are quietly building momentum in the race for European football, while Espanyol’s dramatic dip continues to raise eyebrows.
The Hard Tackle takes a closer look at five key takeaways from Matchday 30 of the 2025/26 La Liga season.
Real Madrid’s La Liga title hopes are over
While there are still eight games to go, it seems Real Madrid’s hope of winning the league title are over following their surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of relegation-threatened RCD Mallorca. Heading into this fixture, the Merengues were only four points behind leaders Barcelona, so they did have a chance of catching up.
But post this round of fixtures, the reigning champions now have a seven-point lead and given the kind of form they have been in, they are unlikely to give Los Blancos another chance. In the game against Mallorca, Real Madrid dominated the ball and created a lot of chances, but they were wasteful in front of goal.
While Eder Militao did bring them back into the mix with an 88th-minute strike, the team in white could not afford to settle for a draw. They went all out attack, leaving too much space behind, and Mallorca made the most out of it. An injury-time strike by Vedat Muriqi not only rattled Madrid’s title hopes, but it also helped his team jump out of the drop zone.
Barcelona on the verge of defending the title
With Real Madrid dropping points earlier in the day, Barcelona entered the game against Atletico Madrid with the opportunity to get one of their hands on the 2025/26 La Liga title. They had the opportunity to go seven points clear at the top, and Hansi Flick’s men made it count when it mattered the most.
While Diego Simeone’s men didn’t make life easy for them, the Catalan giants ground out a positive result on the night. While Atletico Madrid took the lead, Marcus Rashford helped level things up in a matter of minutes. Nicolas Gonzalez’s sending off in the injury time of the first half tilted the game in Barcelona’s favour.
The Colchoneros did put up a strong fight, but Robert Lewandowski came off the bench to win the game for Flick’s team. While you could consider the deflected strike lucky, the Polish international was in the right place at the right time. Now with just eight games to go, Barcelona’s seven-point lead should be more than enough to get them the title.
Espanyol remain winless in 2026
We have entered the fourth month of the new year, and to everyone’s surprise, Espanyol are yet to win a La Liga game. The Catalan outfit have been winless in their last 13 league outings following their 0-0 draw against Real Betis.
Espanyol have had an incredible fall in 2026. Until the end of last year, they were in contention for a top-four spot, and now they are 10th on the table. While the Periquitos are only six points off the UEFA Europa Conference League spot, their form suggests catching up to Celta Vigo is beyond their reach.
In the game against an out-of-form Real Betis outfit, they were completely second best and will consider themselves lucky that they walked out with a point. Meanwhile, Betis have now extended their winless run in La Liga to six games, and if things carry on in a similar fashion, they could miss out on European football.
Sevilla gear up for an intense La Liga relegation battle
Sevilla survived the drop last season by the smallest of margins, and their fans will be hoping they can do it once again this term. The Andalusian outfit were in a very comfortable position a couple of months back, but a poor run of form means they are only two points above the drop zone with eight games to go.
Los Nervionenses are winless in their last five La Liga games. More importantly, they have only won one out of their last nine league outings. They have lost each of their last three league matches, including a surprising 1-0 defeat at the hands of bottom-placed Real Oviedo last time out.
Sevilla conceded post the 30-minute mark, and following Tanguy Nianzou’s dismissal, there was no way back for Sevilla in this game. With only a handful of matches to go, they need to get their act together, or they could end up getting relegated.
Getafe’s late push for a European spot
Getafe secured a hard-fought 2-0 win over Athletic Club on Sunday, their fourth win in their last five La Liga outings. With this win, they are now eighth on the table with 41 points in their 30 outings. They are only three points behind sixth-placed Celta Vigo.
The Azulones have won six out of their last eight league outings, which has significantly bolstered their chances of securing a European spot. They were not in the best of form until January and could have easily been dragged into the relegation battle.
However, the sensational form of Luis Vazquez and Martin Satriano has sparked belief. Victories over Real Madrid, Real Betis, and Villarreal have come on the back of the duo’s impact in the final third. While a sixth-placed finish would all but guarantee European football, even eighth could be enough depending on European cup outcomes and UEFA coefficient allocations.
