Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid can sign Cristian Romero for €60 million instead of €70 million, Manchester United also keen

No shortage of suitors for Tottenham Hotspur skipper Cristian Romero as Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Manchester United line up.

Tottenham Hotspur may have far bigger concerns occupying their attention right now, but the growing noise around Cristian Romero’s future is unlikely to fade anytime soon. When one of your most important players is also one of the most highly regarded defenders in Europe, speculation tends to follow naturally, and in this case, it is beginning to gather real momentum.

Romero remains one of the few unquestioned leaders in a Spurs side that has endured an inconsistent and frustrating campaign. His aggression, composure in possession and ability to defend on the front foot have made him a key figure in North London, but those same traits are exactly why some of Europe’s biggest clubs are circling ahead of the summer.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Atletico Madrid have not moved on from their long-standing admiration for the Argentine international. Diego Simeone is believed to remain a huge admirer of Romero, viewing him as an ideal fit for his system and mentality. While a deal was difficult to pull off in the past, the possibility of reigniting that pursuit appears to remain alive.

What makes the situation even more intriguing is the suggestion that Romero could be available for less than Tottenham’s widely discussed €70 million valuation but there may be a route for certain clubs to sign him for around €60 million, which would naturally alert several elite sides looking to strengthen at the back.

Atletico are not alone either. Real Madrid are also said to be aware of Romero’s situation and continue to appreciate his profile, particularly given their need to refresh and reinforce defensive options. For a player entering what should be the prime years of his career, the lure of La Liga would undoubtedly be significant.

If Tottenham were hoping the interest would remain limited to Spain, that does not appear to be the case. Manchester United are also reportedly keeping tabs on Romero as they assess defensive reinforcements for next season.

That adds another layer of concern for Spurs, especially if they fail to offer a convincing sporting project in the months ahead. Romero is not the kind of player Tottenham would want to lose lightly, but modern transfer windows are often shaped by ambition as much as money.

There are also external variables that could shift the market quickly. A strong international summer with Argentina would only strengthen Romero’s standing, while any further instability at club level could make his future a far more serious talking point than Tottenham would like.

Tottenham should be doing everything possible to keep Cristian Romero, because players of his quality and personality are not easy to replace. But if several heavyweight clubs are genuinely in the race and a lower-than-expected fee is possible, this feels like a story that could accelerate very quickly. Spurs may still hold the cards for now, just not as firmly as they would want. If relegation does become an unwanted reality in North London, thwy will find their hold on the matter slipping away fast.
