Liverpool are all set to battle Manchester United in their pursuit of Newcastle United defensive sensation Malick Thiaw.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool and Manchester United are both keen on signing Malick Thiaw, who has done wonders for Newcastle in his debut campaign. Both Premier League giants are ready to battle it out for his signature, but they are unlikely to get their hands on him, as the Magpies consider him untouchable.
After coming up the ranks at FC Schalke 04 and making a name for himself while playing for their first team, Thiaw had a short, impressive stint at AC Milan before making the move to the Tyneside club last summer in a deal worth £35 million.
Malick Thiaw has taken his game to the next level since joining Newcastle United. He has been a revelation at the back for Eddie Howe’s team. The 24-year-old has been involved in 42 matches across competitions, racked up over 3,600 minutes and has even contributed towards six goals.
Premier League giants want Thiaw
Malick Thiaw’s exceptional performances have not gone unnoticed. Multiple top clubs from across Europe are keeping tabs on him, and rival clubs in the country are ready to try and prise him away. Liverpool and Manchester United have emerged as the biggest contenders for his signature.
The Red Devils are looking to revamp their backline, and with Harry Maguire’s future uncertain, Thiaw could be an ideal long-term replacement. The Reds are set to rival Manchester United, as Arne Slot’s team are plotting a major overhaul at the back.
Ibrahima Konate could end up leaving the club as a free agent, and they are looking to cash in on Joe Gomez. As a result, the Reds will be in the market for multiple centre-backs, and Thiaw is believed to be a priority target for them.
Newcastle United don’t intend to sell Malick Thiaw
While Liverpool and United are very keen on signing Thiaw, they have suffered a massive blow as Newcastle have already shut down approaches. The 24-year-old is loving life at the Tyneside club, and with a long-term contract in place, he is going nowhere.
Thiaw is fully committed to their project, and the club does not intend to negotiate his departure. Any move would require a colossal fee. Not only are Newcastle United looking to keep hold of the German international, but they will also be trying to add more quality to their backline in the summer.
