Florentino Perez rules out summer move for Cristian Romero

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has ruled out a move for Tottenham defensive mainstay Cristian Romero.

Despite adding Dean Huijsen to their ranks last summer, Real Madrid believe they lack depth and quality at the back. As a result, Los Blancos are on the lookout for a new centre-back. They want to reinforce their defence on a priority basis this summer, and Cristian Romero has been mentioned as a target.

The Tottenham captain is one of the names that have been constantly linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu. The Argentine international winner is considered an ideal fit for the Spanish giants because of his strong physical presence, leadership, aggression and experience. However, according to a report from Fichajes, Real Madrid have decided against making a move for the 27-year-old.

The Spanish club’s president, Florentino Perez, has ruled out signing of Cristian Romero. The Merengues have decided not to pursue his signature because of the high cost of operation and the existence of more appealing options.

Romero has only gone from strength to strength since joining the North London club back in 2021. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has not only established himself as one of their mainstays, but he is also widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world.

Real Madrid decide against making a move for Romero

Amidst all the talk around his future, Spurs handed Cristian Romero a new deal last summer, which now runs until 2029. Thanks to the new deal, the Lilywhites have complete control over his future and will only let him leave if there is a massive financial offer on the table.

Real Madrid are well aware of his situation. People at Valdebebas believe the operation to bring Romero to the Spanish capital could prove very complex and costly. As a result, they have decided against it and are looking at players with a favourable contractual situation.

Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck is at the top of their wishlist. Since he will only have a year left on his deal this summer, Los Blancos feel they could secure his services for a bargain. Irrespective of who they sign, it seems Romero certainly won’t be the one.
