Manchester United not viewing Michael Carrick as managerial favourite

Michael Carrick is not the leading candidate to become the next Manchester United manager despite an incredible start as caretaker.

Manchester United’s search for their next permanent manager continues, as they do their due diligence on a number of candidates. While Michael Carrick has done wonders since taking charge as their caretaker, he is still not the front-runner for the role, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

After a disappointing first half of the season, the Red Devils ended up parting ways with Ruben Amorim back in January. In order to steady the ship, they handed the reins to their former midfielder Carrick on an interim basis.

Carrick’s incredible start at Old Trafford

Since taking charge, the 44-year-old has led them in five Premier League games. Not only are they unbeaten under him, but the Manchester-based giants have won four of those games. They have defeated the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham in the process.

They are currently fifth in the league and have a realistic chance of finishing in a Champions League spot. Carrick has managed to completely change the mood in their camp. Reports have suggested that he is the leading candidate to be their next permanent manager.

Carrick is not the front-runner for the job

However, in reality, the 44-year-old is not the front-runner for them. While they will certainly consider him should he make himself available, the Red Devils continue to look at the market for better, more proven options.

The club’s hierarchy are carrying out thorough due diligence as they look for a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim. Despite an incredible start at Old Trafford, there is a clear message internally that Carrick won’t be simply handed the job on the basis of short-term improvement.

The board needs to be completely certain about him being the right guy, and Champions League qualification could actually help his cause. The club wants to have a clearer picture regarding the managerial scenario by the end of April, as they want to head into the summer with a defined plan and direction.
