Harry Maguire increasingly likely to sign new Manchester United contract

Harry Maguire looks poised to extend his stay at Manchester United following a massive turnaround in his form under Michael Carrick.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United and Harry Maguire could continue their association with the experienced centre-back, likely to be handed a new deal. The rejuvenated England international has turned his form around under interim boss Michael Carrick, which could lead to him staying put.

There are two sides to Harry Maguire’s recent form; one under former manager Ruben Amorim and then now, with Michael Carrick getting the best out of the experienced star. While the veteran defender is inching closer towards the expiry of his £180,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford, there is a big possibility he stays beyond the summer.

Maguire’s contract ends in the summer, with Manchester United already using their one-year extension last season to keep hold of the experienced star. There are some clubs interested in signing Maguire on a free transfer, but the player could stay put at Old Trafford.

Since the arrival of Carrick in the interim role following the sacking of Amorim, Harry Maguire has played an instrumental role as Manchester United have gone five games without defeat. Manchester United have been thinking about a new contract for the Englishman, and that might be forthcoming in the next phase.

The length and salary package of the experienced defender’s next deal remains unclear, but the club could open talks over a new contract soon. That may not be the end of their search for a new centre-back, with the club likely making plans to keep a core player alongside adding quality using the transfer market.

Maguire’s decision right for Manchester United?

Maguire is reportedly open to staying at Manchester United, and his performances under Carrick have shown he still has it in him to perform at the highest level. The partnership with Lisandro Martinez has galvanised the backline and the team as a whole, with the club currently leaning towards continuity rather than changing things in their defence.

For now, there are plans in place to offer a new deal to Maguire, which could come sooner rather than later. It remains to be seen whether the experienced defender must take a pay cut on his £180,000-a-week wages, as well as who the club will sign to strengthen their backline in the summer.
