Liverpool call off Tottenham move for Andrew Robertson

Liverpool have called off Andrew Robertson’s departure to Tottenham despite reaching an agreement in principle earlier.

According to an update by Ben Jacobs, Liverpool will not proceed with the sale of Andrew Robertson after evaluating the defensive situation in the background. The player is also open to staying and acted in good faith, even though Tottenham did have an agreement in principle with the Reds for the move.

Liverpool fans were taken by surprise when Andrew Robertson was linked with an imminent move to Tottenham just a few days ago. The experienced left-back is in the final six months of his deal at Anfield, and it may have been a decision based on the idea of cashing in now rather than letting the Scottish star leave on a free after the season.

Tottenham had an agreement in principle with Liverpool, and as Ben Jacobs confirms, they had committed to paying a fee worth over £5 million, including add-ons. Robertson was also open to joining Spurs and taking on a new challenge, especially after the North Londoners lost Ben Davies for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury.

Liverpool then contemplated recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at AS Roma, with the Giallorossi also green-lit the idea to send the Greek star back to his parent club. However, Liverpool, together with Robertson, have decided to call off the Tottenham move as things stand, with the player now set to remain at Anfield for the remainder of the season.

The decision may have come after evaluating their defensive setup and the time remaining in the window to secure a replacement. They may have also had doubts about Tsimikas’s covering for the Scotsman, while Arne Slot and Virgil van Dijk made it clear they wanted Robertson to stay.

Can Spurs revive this move?

As things stand, the deal seems to be off, although there are always late twists in the transfer window. Tottenham Hotspur could look at other options in the window, but they had earmarked the idea of signing Andrew Robertson as a viable replacement for Ben Davies.

Any chance of this move reviving again will depend on whether Liverpool change their stance. They had been looking at replacement options, including Fulham’s Antonee Robinson. But given the lateness in the window as well as the quality of player they might need to replace Robertson, there may not be enough time to find a solution, as the Liverpool wide man is pencilled in to leave as a free agent in the summer.
