Tottenham are not working on a deal to sign Leon Goretzka despite reports stating otherwise, as the midfielder plans to stay on.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Tottenham are not working on a move for Leon Goretzka despite widespread reports stating otherwise. The Bayern Munich midfielder is not seeking an exit from the club in January despite his contract expiring at the end of the season.
Leon Goretzka has been in the news, with recent reports stating he could angle a move out of Bayern Munich to play elsewhere. The idea stemmed from the notion that the 30-year-old long-serving star is no longer a key part of Vincent Kompany’s plans, which may not be the case factually.
Kompany has started the German international in 12 out of the 15 Bundesliga games so far, and the player has done an admirable job. The only caveat is that Goretzka barely completes 90 minutes on the pitch, while there is a perception that Aleksandar Pavlovic and Joshua Kimmich are the preferred midfield pairing, something the stats do not signify.
Tottenham held an interest in Leon Goretzka ahead of the January transfer window after suggestions that Thomas Frank wants to recruit in the position. The North Londoners signed another Bayern Munich player, Joao Palhinha, on loan during the summer, and could use their relationship with the Bundesliga giants to tie up a move for Goretzka.
Another story of late claimed Goretzka was sounded out over a move to Tottenham, although that has now been dismissed out of hand. Florian Plettenberg insists the 30-year-old long-serving star does not want to leave Bayern Munich in January despite his deal expiring in the summer. Spurs could look at other targets, with Conor Gallagher linked with a January move.
What next for Leon Goretzka?
Goretzka is coming to the end of his long-serving reign at Bayern Munich, as there is no news on a potential new deal for the experienced midfielder. While he remains an integral part of Vincent Kompany’s plans this season, there are significant doubts about the long-term future.
Bayern Munich have often allowed some of their key and experienced stars to reach the final part of their respective contracts, and that may be the case with Goretzka. There could be a late twist in the tale as the Bavarian giants could offer him a new deal, or else he could leave in the summer on a free transfer.
