Liverpool handed blow in their pursuit of Alessandro Bastoni

Arne Slot’s Liverpool have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Inter Milan defensive mainstay Alessandro Bastoni.

Liverpool are keen on reinforcing their defence in the upcoming winter transfer window. The Reds are keen on signing Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni. But, according to a report from Fichajes, the Merseyside club have suffered a blow as the Italian international has made it clear that he has no intentions of leaving Inter Milan in the winter window.

Bastoni’s sensational rise at Inter Milan

Inter signed Bastoni from Atalanta back in 2017. After a few loan spells away from the club, he eventually managed to break into the first team. The 26-year-old has been one of their mainstays over the years and has helped them win two league titles.

The left-footed centre-back is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world. His physical presence, anticipation, ball-playing ability, and experience are key reasons why some of the biggest clubs are after him.

Liverpool are one of the clubs that are keen on signing the Italian centre-back. The Reds have been looking for a left-footed defender for some time, and Bastoni’s profile is considered a perfect fit.

With Virgil van Dijk in the final phase of his career and Ibrahima Konate’s future uncertain, the Reds want to bring in someone who can strengthen their defensive rotation in the short term and become one of the leaders of their defence going forward.

Liverpool are unlikely to sign Bastoni in January

Bastoni ticks all boxes for Arne Slot’s team, and they seem willing to make a big splash of close to €100 million to sign him in January. But, as per the report, the 26-year-old has decided against making a move in the upcoming transfer window.

For now, he wants to continue at Inter and prepare for the World Cup next summer. The Merseyside club will have to wait until next summer to stand a chance of signing him.

With his contract running until 2028, Inter Milan have no intention of selling him in the short term. Their priority is to secure his future with a new long-term deal. Even if they fail to agree on an extension, the Serie A outfit will only sanction his sale if they receive an offer that meets their valuation.
