Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are reportedly all set to hold contract renewal talks with veteran centre-back Fabian Schar.
According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Newcastle United could soon enter into contract renewal talks with Fabian Schar. With the veteran centre-back’s current contract running out at the end of the season, the Magpies are looking to extend his stay at the club as he remains an important part of Eddie Howe’s team.
Schar joined Newcastle United back in the summer of 2018 from Deportivo de La Coruna. The Swiss international has only gone from strength to strength over the years, and he has been an integral part of their first-team under Howe in recent seasons.
The experienced defender is currently in his eighth season at the club. While he will soon turn 34, he is still a valuable member of their squad. The player has been involved in nine games this season, and he has even bagged a goal.
When Newcastle United signed Malick Thiaw from AC Milan in the last summer window, it felt like Fabian Schar’s time at the club was slowly coming to an end. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. While they are still planning for the long run and are looking to sign someone like Joel Ordonez to replace him, the Tyneside club are not ready to part ways with him just yet.
Schar to continue at Newcastle for another season
While speaking about Schar’s future, O’Rourke said, “Newcastle, long-term, are probably going to have to be looking at defensive reinforcements. Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, both 33 now, Schar himself is out of contract in the summer. I’m sure talks are going on over a new deal.
“Then one of the other centre backs in the squad, Jamaal Lascelles, he’s also out of contract in 2026. I think heading into next season, Newcastle probably will need reinforcements in that back line and probably that’s why they’re looking at players like Ordonez.”
Apart from Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, and Emil Krafth’s contracts are also running out at the end of the season. Given the game time Lascelles and Krafth have received, they are likely to part ways with the club. As a result, renewing Schar’s contract is of utmost importance.
Not only is he a key part of their plans, but his experience also comes in handy for Howe. While the club will certainly push to freshen things up at the back with a few new faces, they are also going to try and extend Schar’s contract. They are all set to hold talks with the 33-year-old going forward.
